If you are interested in our island wine industry and I’m guessing you are if you are reading this blog there are organizations that you don’t want to miss exploring!  We are just home from the Wine Islands Growers Association Conference this year held at the Oceanfront Suites at Cowichan Bay.  The first day was spent tasting tank samples of island red wines.   We talked about regional identity (how our varietal wines grown here taste different from the same varietals grown in the Okanagan).  We also talked about each wine exploring possible options for finishing them before bottling.  Many of these wines will not be released until at least 2017 so that means you need to assess the wine knowing that it’s got more time in barrel over the next 12 months and that the relationship between fruit, oak, acidity and residual sugar will likely change quite a bit by then.  Having several experienced opinions in the room made for a great learning experience.
