Product Description

Ortega is a German cross of Muller Thurgau and Siegerrebe.   It is one of the largest plantings on Vancouver Island and was one of the varietals identified as best for our cool coastal climate in the Duncan grape trials in the early 1980’s.   We grow Ortega grapes at our Starling Lane Vineyard.   The Ortega vines are 16 years old and are on rootstock C3309. We grow it VSP (vertical shoot profile) and bud and shoot thin in early Spring to about 16 shoots per vine.  It produces at over 6 tons per acre –  double what we get from our Pinots!   It ripens at least 2 weeks earlier than the Pinots.
