Ortega 2018 $20.00

Our 2018 Ortega has wonderful lime, and fragrant peach on the nose.  It has a dry, juicy palate with zesty citrus, white peach, ripe melon, and a clean crisp finish.   Great with soft island cheeses  or serve with local spot prawns.

Product Description

Ortega is a German cross of Muller Thurgau and Siegerrebe.   It is one of the largest plantings on Vancouver Island and was one of the varietals identified as best for our cool coastal climate in the Duncan grape trials in the early 1980’s.    We farm our Ortega at friends Sherry and Jerry Mussio on Bryn Road nearby.   Their vineyard and partnership with two other couples and their vineyards went into making Starling Lane Ortega.    We single cane prune and grow the Ortega VSP (vertical shoot profile) with bud and shoot thinning in early Spring to about 16 shoots per vine.  It produces at over 6 tons per acre –  double what we get from our Pinots and it ripens at least two weeks earlier!
