Product Description

Marechal Foch (“Foch”) is a red variety of hybrid grape.  It was created in 1886 in Colmar, Alsace, by the French Viticulturist Eugene Kuhlman by crossing the hybrid grape Millardet et Grasset 101-14 (which is vitis vinifera x vitis rupestris) with the vitis vinifera Gold riesling.   Kuhlman also developed the hybrid grapes Leon Millot (“Millot”) , Marechal Joffre and Lucie Kuhlmann from the same trials. We grow Foch at our Starling Lane Vineyard.  When we leased this property in 2013 we changed the vine management in Spring from high 6′ cordons to low cordons  by chopping off the truck at 24″.  In May the vines exploded into leaf and by September the canopy was so full Lamont was clipping the canopy back with electric hedgers every week.  It needs quite a bit of work to keep the canopy stripped back to allow for airflow around, and sunshine on, the fruit zone.
